TermDefinition
Poles Most northern and southern partos of the globe (north pole, south pole)
Globe A model of the earth that is round like a ball
Hemispheres Imaginary lines that divide the earth in four parts or hemispheres (northern, southern, eastern and western)
Road Map A map that shows local roads, streets and highways
Political Map A map that shows borders and boundries
Relief Map A map that shows how high and low land is
Solar System Map A map that includes the planets and the sun
City Map A map that shows streets, major builings, parks and other city landmarks
Equator An imaginary line that splits the earth in two
Grid Map A map this is divided into boxes. Letters and numbers are used to located a place.
Weather Map A map that shows the expected weather in a certain area
Population Map A map that shows the amount of people that live in a specified area
Symbols Small drawings that illustrate and explain objuects and places on a map
Labels Used to identify places on the map
Boundary A line that separates and outlines an area of land (example: state lines, country lines, continent lines)
Scale A tool used ot measure distance on a map
Map Title Labels the type of map it is.
Map Key It includes the symbols or drawings that stand for locations on the map.
Compass Rose A symbol on a map that illustrates direction. It includes the cardinal directions N, S, E, W, NW, NE, SE, SW
Continents Big masses of land on the Earth. There are 7.
Ocean A large body of salt water. There are 4.
Mountains areas of land that rise to great heights.
Plain A large, flat area of land.
Valley An area of low land between 2 mountains.
Island An area of land that is surrounded by water.
Plateau High, flat land.
Hill A natural elevation smaller than a mountain.
