1.)"new" immigrant- immigrants that were unskilled and had little to no money.
2.)steerage- third-class accommodation a steamship,which were usually overcrowded and dirty.
3.)Ellis island island in New York harbor that served as an immigration station for millions of immigrants arriving in the united states.
4.)angel island immigrant processing station that opened in san Francisco.
5.)Americanization- belief that assimilating immigrants into society would make them more loyal citizens.
6.)"melting pot"- society in which people of different nationalities assimilate to form one culture.
7.)nativism- belief that native born-white Americans are superior to newcomers.
8.)Chinese exclusion act of 1882- law that prohibited the immigration of Chinese laborers.
9.)urbanization- expansion of cities and/or an increase in the number of people living in them.
10.)rural-to-urban migrant- a person who moves from an agriculture area to a city.
11.)skyscraper- very tall building.
12.)mass transit- public transportation systems that carry large numbers of people.
13.)suburb- residential areas surrounding a city.
14.)tenement- multistory building divided into apartments to house as many families as possible.
16.)gilded age- term coined by mark twain to describe the post-reconstruction era which was characterized by a façade of prosperity.
17.)conspicuous consumerism- purchasing of goods and services for the purpose of impressing others.
18.)mass culture- similar cultural patterns in a society as a result of the spread of transportation, communization, and advertising.
