What is the Northwest Passage? The supposed route across the northern part of North America that Europeans were looking for but never found.
What are Conquistadors? Spanish explorers that came to the Americas in the 1500s and claimed large areas of land for Spain.
What is contagious disease? A sickness that can pass quickly from one person to another as germs are spread by touch or through air.
Where was Christopher Columbus born? Geona, Italy
Who sponsored Columbus's voyage? What did they donate? King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain sponsored him. They gave him 3 ships and 90 crew members.
What were Christopher Columbus's three ships named? Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria
What did Columbus name the island he found? Who did he claim it for? San Salvador. He claimed it for Spain.
How did Columbus treat the Indians? Very badly.
What was the motive of John Cabot's journey? He wanted to find Asia to get silks and spices. He also wanted to find a safer route to Asia.
Who sponsored John Cabot's voyage? Merchants in England paid for his voyage. King Henry VII gave him permission to sail.
What did Cabot discover? What did he tell England when he returned? He discovered thick green forests, fish, Chesapeake Bay and the Eastern part of Asia.
Did Cabot discover he found a new continent? Why or Why not? He thought he was in Asia, but he was actually in North America.
What were the motives of Juan Ponce De Leons exploration? He heard of a magic fountain that would make you stay young forever. It was called the "Fountain of Youth."
What did Leon discover? How did the Indians respond? He found Florida and Puerto Rico. The indians attacked when he tried to start a settlement in Florida.
Who did Hernan conquer? What were his motives? He conquered the Aztecs and killed all of them. He wanted to find the Aztecs empire to get gold.
What did Hernan do to the Aztec emperor? He took Emperor Montezuma captive.
Describe the battle between the Aztecs and the Spaniards. It was a harsh battle. The Spaniards ended up winning because the Aztecs soon got hungry and became weak. Then Hernan killed them all.
What was Cartier's motive? To find a faster route to Asia and get the riches.
What did Cartier discover? Who did he claim it for? He claimed parts of North America for France.
On Cartier's second voyage what did he discover? Who helped him on his voyage? He discovered the St Lawrence River. The indians were used as his guides.
What were Coronado's voyages? His route was through what is now Mexico and the American Southwest.
What did Coronado discover? How did the Indians help him? He discovered the Grand Canyon and the Rio Grande. And Indian slave told him about a great island. He never found it and had the slave killed.
Who hired Henry Hudson? What were his motives on his expeditions? Henry Hudson wanted to find a northwest passage to Asia. The Dutch East India company in Holland hired him.
What did Hudson discover? What did he believe this land/waterway to be? He discovered the Hudson River, Hudson Bay and the Hudson Valley. He thought it was the Pacific Ocean.
How did La Salle treat the Indians? LaSalle was kind to the Indians. He traded with them before he became an explorer.
What did La Salle discover? Who did he claim this for? He discovered Louisiana and claimed it for France.
Why was Fort Caroline attacked? For Caroline was attacked because they were in Spanish Territory.
What was the first permanent settlement in the New World? The first permanent settlement was in 1564 in Florida.
