Study Guide for Chapter 3 - Archeology

QuestionAnswer
What are fossils? Fossils are the remains or imprints of once living plants or animals.
What do artifacts teach archeologists about? Customs and beliefs of people in the past.
What is a primary source? An object or artifact produced at the time of the event.
What is Archaeology? The locating, recovery and study of the remains of the past.
Excavation is the process of what? Digging up the remains from the past.
What is scientific dating? When objects are analyzed in a laboratory. An example of this is dendrochronology, which is tree ring counting to find its age.
What is absolute dating? When archaeologists find the age of an object in years.
What was the goal of classic archaeology? Classic Archeologists looked for beautiful objects and treasures of dead kings.
Explain cultural diffusion. When different cultures come in contact with each other they exchange goods and ideas. (this is one way to spread ideas from one place to another).
Why do historians evaluate sources? To learn more about the actual events.
What is the goal of modern archeology? To understand the lives of all people, rich and poor. Modern archeologists work with other specialists to study all the things early people left behind. Ancient peoples garbage, referred to as kitchen midden provides important information.
What is a reasoned judgment? A statement that is based on fact but has not yet been proven.
Why do archaeologists reach different conclusions about the past? Evidence can be interpreted in different ways and depends on the background knowledge of the archaeologist.
What is radiocarbon dating? A system for determining the age of an artifact based on the fact that an object's carbon content lessens at a predictable rate.
What is the archeological record? The evidence that the archaeologist recovers and studies?
Name 5 specialists who work with archeologists? Geologists, Botanists, Zoologists, Physicists and Chemists
Name 4 ways cultures come in contact with each other. trade, travel, war and migration
What is an independent invention? An invention that is original and not learned through other societies or other people (cultural diffusion).
What is relative dating? When an archaeologist cannot find out exactly how old an objects is, they find whether it is older or newer compared to other objects they know the age of.
What is a secondary source? An object/artifact that is produced after the time period.
What is prehistory? History that takes place before writing.
