| suffrage | right to vote |
| segragation | separation of blacks and whites in public places such as hotels, schools, restaurants, and trains |
| affirmative action | steps to counteract the effects of past racial discrimination and discrimination against women |
| equal protection | people must be treated fairly, but it does not mean that everyone needs to be treated in exactly the same way. |
| Thirteenth Amendment | Abolished slavery in 1865 |
| Fourteenth Amendment | Also referred to as the "second Bill of Rights" because it says states must respect citizens rights. |
| Fifteenth Amendment | Established Voting Rights for African American men 1870 |
| Nineteenth Amendment | Established Voting Rights for Women in 1920 |
| Twenty-fourth Amendment | Abolishes the poll taxes in 1964 |
| Twenty-sixth Amendment | Lowers the voting age from 21 to 18 in 1971 |
| Twenty-seventh Amendment | Deals with congressional salaries. |
| Dred Scott Decision | Interpreted the Constitution as allowing slavery. |
