what does Persian King Darius want from the city states who helped Ionia? revenge.
where does King Darius land? at Marathon which is 26 miles north of Athens.
what happens to King Darius' troops? they are attacked and defeated.
what happens to the messenger when he runs to Athens? he dies of exhaustion on arrival.
what were the warships called that Athens built making them the largest navy in Greece? triremes.
who is Xerxes, and what does he do? he is the son of Darius and he conquers northern Greece.
what does the city states do to fight? they unite.
what is Sparta's strength? army.
what is Athens strength? navy.
how long did the Greeks fight for? 3 days.
when Greeks fight for 3 days, where does the Athenians flee to? an island called Salamis.
what do the Persians find out due to a Greek traitor they found a way around the Greek fighting force.
what did the Persians find when they got in Athens? there was nobody there, so they proceeded to burn it down.
how is Persia tricked? into a naval attack in a narrow straight.
how did the Greeks defeat the Persians? by having more superior, smaller, faster boats.
when Xerxes returns to Asia, what happens? his troops and navy are defeated, which caused the Persian war to be over.
