Geographically why was secession impractical? The land is bound together, physically impossible to move it
How can Europe benefit from America divided? They can ignore Monroe Doctrine, and send their influence into a weaker country
The Border States, who were they and why were they important? Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware, they were the only states left in the Union that were slave states. The had the highest white population.
Why did Lincoln have to be careful in stating the North's war aims? He wanted to keep the Border States loyal to the Union. He couldn't say it was a fight to the free the blacks, said it was a fight to save the Union
How are Native Americans involved? They sided w/ the confederacy, some of the Indians owned slaves
How did the Civil War cause family problems ? Mostly in the border states a family decided and were separated based on if they wanted to volunteer in the North or South
How did the working class in GB and France feel about North vs South? They wanted the North to win because many were anti-slavery (Uncle Tom's Cabin) Also they didn't want the slaves to take all the jobs
Why doesn't the South's "cotton weapon" bring GB help? Britain became overstocked and India and Egypt also exported cotton
Trent Affair A Union warship stopped a British mail ship near Cuba and forced them to surrender two confederates, Britain was offended because they're the big naval power, US finally surrendered no need for war
Union passed a draft law, how was it biased against the poor? Unfair because rich boys could hire substitutes to go in their place or pay $300 for exemption
1863 Draft Riots In New York city, poor anti-black immigrants didn't want to fight for abolition (racist)
Confederate passed a draft law, how was it unfair against the poor? Slave owners with more than 20 slaves were exempted. The rich could also hire someone or buy their way out.
Southern currency during the war? Printing too much money, result is inflation
New class of wealthy industrialists Made bad quality shoes and uniforms for soldiers
Benefit of Bull Run Although the Union lost because Confederate troops came unexpectedly, it was beneficial to the Union because it was an eye opener
Battle of Antietam one of the bloodiest battles, union wins cause s the world to see them and not want to give foreign aid to the South
Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation changed the war from just saving the Union but to emancipating slaves, it freed the salves in the Confederate but not in the Union because he didn't want to offend the Border States

In beginning of the war policy on black volunteers? The regular army had no blacks and the War Department refused to accept blacks

In the Union, how did the Democratic Party divide? War Democrats supported Lincoln's administration and was willing to keep fighting and Peace Democrats wanted to stop the war and were willing to settle

Why is a negotiated settlement impossible between Union and Confederates? Lincoln didn't want to accept anything that didn't have to do with Union and emancipation. The south didn't want to accept anything that didn't have to do with independence

How did Johnson end up on Lincoln's ticket? Lincoln put him on to attract support from War Democrats and other Pro-Southern elements for the Union Party
Lincoln's 10% plan a state could be brought back into the Union when 10% of its voters have pledge to follow emancipation
Wade-Davis Bill Overrode 10% plan, required 50% of voters plege of allegiance to the US and stronger safeguards for emancipation, failed because Lincoln pocket vetoed it
Moderate Republicans (Lincoln) on restoration Seceded states should be brought back to Union as simply and quickly as reasonably through Congress
Radical Republicans South should suffer more, planters punished and the blacks protected by federal power
Black codes Laws the enforce a stable labor force, strict and harsh

How do the Southern black form politically once they have suffrage? Form Union League, a network of political clubs that educated members and campaigned for Republican candidates
Carpetbaggers Northerners who went to the South in search of power and profit, they wanted to modernize the South
Ku Klux Klan Terrorist group, Masked night triders that would go out and terrorize blacks and if I didn't work they would kill them
Tenure of Office Act Required the president to get permission from the Senate before removing people from the cabinet
Seward's Folly Russia sold Alaska to Seward because they knew it was going to be taken from Britain through a potentials war
