where was Athens located? on the Aegean Coast, which is a strategic location.
what is an oligarchy? government in which few people have the ruling power.
what does the government fight over? landownership.
what does the government attempt to do? reforms to prevent uprising.
who is Draco? an unsuccessful noble in reform because of his harsh punishments.
how strict were the laws? you can be put to death for just stealing an apple.
what is a draconian? extremely harsh or cruel.
who is Solon? a rich merchant who tries reform.
what is a constitution? rules for governing.
what reforms does solon do? he sets up a constitution, fathers must teach there sons how to trade, increase in government participation by people, and increase in trade.
what does Peisistratus do? runs the government.
Peisistratus also... divided large estates among farmers without land.
