| deforestation | the process of clearing forests, selling the timber, and using the cleared land for other purposes |
| clear-cutting | cutting all the trees in an area down at once |
| constitutional monarchy | A government in which a King or Queen is the head of state with little real power and is limited by a constitution. |
| monarch | king or queen, symbol of a country |
| head of state | in a parliamentary system, the symbolic leader of the country |
| prime minister | the head of state in a parliamentary system of democracy, responsible for running the day-to-day operations of government |
| parliamentary democracy | type of democratic government where citizens elect members of parliament who choose a prime minister |
| province | An area, such as a state, that is part of a larger country. |
| run-off | water that runs off the ground into lakes, rivers, or streams |
