Estate | One of the three classes into which French society was divided before the revolution; the clergy ( first estate) , the nobles ( second estate) , and the townspeople ( third estate). |
Relics of Feudalism | Obligations of peasants to noble landlords that survived into the modern era. |
Bourgeoisie | The middle class, including merchants, industrialists, and professional people. |
San-culottes | "Without breeches" , members of the Paris Commune who considered themselves ordinary patriots. ( they wore long trousers instead of fine knee- length breeches.) |
Louis XVI | King of France - forced to call a meeting of the Estates- General to raise new taxes. |
Tennis Court Oath | Deputes swore to this oath that states they would continue to meet until they produced a French constitution. |
Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen | Adopted by the National Assembly on August 26th ... Proclaimed freedom and equal rights for all men, access to public office based on talent, and an end to exemptions from taxations. |
Olympe deGouges | A women who wrote plays and pamphlets, refused to accept this exclusion of women from political rights. |
Faction | A dissenting group |
Elector | An individual qualified to vote in an election. |
Coup d'etat | A sudden overthrow of the government. |
George Danton | Newly appointed minister of justice. |
Jean-Paul Marat | Published a radical journal called Friend of the People : new leader who emerged. |
Committee of Public Safety | National convention gave broad powers to a special committee of 12. |
Maximilen Robespierre | French revolutionary leader... Dominated the committee of public safety after George Danton. |
Reign of Terror | An effort set to resolve crisis... Revolutionary courts were set up to prosecute internal enemies of the revolutionary republic. |
Consulate | Government established in France after the overthrow of the Directory in 1799, with Napoleon as 1st consul in control of the entire government. |
Nationalism | The unique cultural identity of people based on common language, religion, and national symbols. |
Napoleon Bonaparte | Brought French revolution to an end in 1799...started new government where he held absolute power although it was a republic. |
Civil code | Preserved most of the gains of the revolution by recognizing the principle of equality of all citizens before the law, the right of the individual to choose a profession, religious toleration, and the abolition of serfdom and feudalism. |
Anne-Louis-Germaine de Stael | Prominent writer .... Established a salon for the powerful (1790-1804). Napoleon banned her books and exiled her to German states. |
