Unicameral A one house legislature
Limited Government Government is limited to what they can do
Expressed Powers Powers given directly by the constitution
Popular Sovereignty Ruled by the people
Constituents Voters who are electing the representatives
Implied Powers Powers implied by the expressed powers
Veto President rejects a bill that was passed by the legislature
Force Theory A person or group claimed control over an area and the people who lived there
Impeach To accuse or charge with misconduct
Ratification Approval of an amendment by the state
Unconstitutional Goes against the constitution
Evolutionary Theory The state developed out of the family with the oldest male being the head of the state
Social Contract Theory People come together to form a state to protect themselves from outside forces
Filibuster Debate on the floor of the Senate that is unrelated to the bill
Divine Right Theory The state was created by God and God had given those royal birth the right to rule
Cabinet Presidential advisory body composed of the heads of the executive department
Civil Law Deals with fault and payment
Override Congress overrules a veto by the president
Bicameral A two house legislature
Constitutionalism Bound by the fundamental laws in the constitution
Separation of Powers Power of Government is split between 3 branches
Inherent Powers Powers that belong to it because it is the National Government of a sovereign state
Compromise Coming to agreement
Elastic Clause Gives congress the power to make laws needed to carry out its other responsibilities
Cloture Vote to limit floor debate in the Senate
Criminal Law Deals with crimes and punishments
