The Railroads

TermDefinition
Union Pacific RR Began pushing westward from Omaha, Nebraska, in 1865, under supervision of Grenville Dodge, engineer and former Civil War Union general. At height employed 10,000 veterans, Irish, ex-convicts, adventurers. Rugged environment!
Central Pacific RR Started in CA, stock sold to 4 merchants, one of which was Stanford (university). Built eastward to meet Union Pac RR. employed about 10,000 Chinese immigrants.
Time Zones To make rail service safer and more reliable, in 1883 the American Railway Association divided the country into four time zones in regions where the same time was kept. The federal government ratified this change in 1918.
Land Grant Land given by govt. to rail companies to encourage construction. RR companies sold to settlers, etc. to rise $ needed to build RR. Caused some corruption at govt. level.
