| abolish | to put an end to something officially |
| compromise | an agreementthat is reached after people with opposing views each give up some of their demands |
| confederate | belonging to a union of people or nations |
| contrabands | slaves who escaped to Union army lines |
| emancipation | the freeing of a person or group from slavery or control |
| fugitive | someone who is running away |
| homestead | to work land in exchnage for being given the land |
| indentured | bound by an agreement to work for someone for a certain period of time |
| overseer | a boss or superivsor |
| plantations | large farms found in warm climates, usually with a single main crop |
| seceded | withdrew formally from a group or organization |
| slavers | people who sold and transported slaves |
