What were some of Vladimir's accomplishments? Married sister of Byzantine emperor, made E. Orthodox religion of the Rus, aligned his kingdom politically and culturally with the Byzantine empire, and adopted art, music, and architecture from Byzantine culture.
Who was Vladimir's son and how did he make Kiev stronger? Yaroslav helped make Kiev stronger through spreading Christianity and military victories.
What did Yaroslav accomplish? Gave legal status to the Church, had many religious texts translated into the Slavic language, made improvements to the city of Kiev, and issued a written code of law.
Who was Genghis Khan? "World Emperor", united Mongols and took over lands from China to E. Europe.
What was the Golden Horde? Mongol armies that looted and burned Kiev and other Russian towns, and killed a large majority of the Russian population.
What was the Russian govt. known for due to the Mongols? Absolute power.
How did Ivan the Terrible centralize his power? By limiting the privileges of the old boyar families and granting land to nobles in exchange for military and other services, and introduced feudalism.
Why was Ivan IV called Ivan the terrible? He tortured, killed,, and had his people living in constant fear.
What was another name for the Byzantine Empire? Eastern Roman Empire
The Byzantine Empire was primarily a... Trade empire.
The capital of the new Rome was what city? Constantinople.
What were three of Justinian's accomplishments? The Hagia Sophia, rebuilding Constantinople, and creating Justinian's Code.
What was the main issue between Roman Catholicism and E. Orthodox? The use of icons.
What was the location of Constantinople perfect for? Trade.
What were three reasons for the decline of the Byzantine Empire? The plague, the Crusades, and the invasion of the Muslims.
What was the main contribution that the Byzantine Empire left behind? The legacy of Greek and Roman knowledge.
What was an icon? A religious symbol.
What did the Abbasids take note on the Turks for? Military skills.
Why did Abbasids buy Turkish children? They were very loyal and trustworthy.
Who were the Seljuks? a Turkish group who migrated into the Abbasid Empire in the 10th century and established their own empire in the 11th century.
How did the Turks secure Persian support? Chose Persian city of Isfahan as their empire's capital, and appointed many Persians as government officials.
Who was Malik Shah? Malik Shah1055 1092Malik Shah is thought to be the greatest of the Seljuk sultans. Among his achievements, he built the great mosque Masjid-i-Jame in Isfahan.
What were Seljuk rulers called? shah
What happened in 1258? Hulagu led his army into the outskirts of Baghdad
