Farming the Great Plains

| Homestead Act | 1862-A governmnet program that offered cheap land to prospedtive settlers and promised land ownership (The American Dream!!! |
| Dry Farming | Planting seeds very deeply into the ground to find moisture for them to grow. |
| Sodbuster | Those that plowed the soil on the plains. Many lost their homesteads due to drought, wind erosion, and overuse of the land. |
| Wheat Belt | Eastern edge of the Great Plains and Encompassed much of the Dakotas and the western parts of Nebraska and Kansas. |
| Wheat | Crop that withstood drought better than corn. As important to the Great Plains as cotton to the south. Well suited for harvest by machines such as threshers, reapers, and binders. |
