Farming the Great Plains

TermDefinition
Homestead Act 1862-A governmnet program that offered cheap land to prospedtive settlers and promised land ownership (The American Dream!!!
Dry Farming Planting seeds very deeply into the ground to find moisture for them to grow.
Sodbuster Those that plowed the soil on the plains. Many lost their homesteads due to drought, wind erosion, and overuse of the land.
Wheat Belt Eastern edge of the Great Plains and Encompassed much of the Dakotas and the western parts of Nebraska and Kansas.
Wheat Crop that withstood drought better than corn. As important to the Great Plains as cotton to the south. Well suited for harvest by machines such as threshers, reapers, and binders.
