Sugar Act Tax on molasses, coffee and indigo
Quartering Act British troops can stay in colonial homes. Colonists supply them with bedding, candles, food.
Stamp Act Tax on printable documents(wills/newspapers). Wax stamp showed payment. Result: Protests, Stamp Act Congress called.
Stamp Act Congress 9 colonies send delegates to NYC to protest(no VA, NC, GA, NH). They wrote a petition.
Petition Written request to someone in authority.
"No Taxation Without Representation" Colonists thought taxes were unjust because they were *not represented in Parliament*
Albany Plan of Union Document outlining Ben Franklins plan for a united government during the French and Indian War.
Treaty of Paris 1763 The treaty that ended the French and Indian War.
Sons/Daughters of Liberty Group that organized protests against Parliament.
Boycott Refusal to buy certain goods and services.
Repeal To cancel a law
Patrick Henry Well known as a violent critic of British policies. His speeches in the House of Burgesses moved listeners to anger and tears. "Give me liberty or give me death!"
Mercy Otis Warren Published plays that made fun of British officials. Called for greater rights for women in the colonies.
Samuel Adams Greatest talent was organizing people. He was the leader of the Sons of Liberty
John Adams Weighed evidence carefully before acting as a lawyer.
Townshend Act Tax on glass, paper, paint, lead and tea
Writs of Assitance A law to stop Yankee merchant smuggling. British officials can inspect a ships cargo.
Non-importation Agreements Colonists agree not to import goods taxed by Townshend Acts.
Militia Army of citizens serve as soldiers during an emergency.
Committees of Correspondence Organizations of colonists who wrote letters and pamphlets protesting British actions to other colonies
Boston Massacre The killing of five colonists by British regulars. Result of tensions in the colonies created by British troops(MA) and taxes.
Tea Act Created to help the British East India Company sell directly to the colonists.
Boston Tea Party Members of Sons of Liberty board ships and split open tea chests into Boston Harbor.
Intolerable Acts The King punishes Massachusetts for Tea Party. Boston Harbor closes, no more town meetings, Boston officials have trials in England, and the Quartering Act is revised
