Vocabulary Words for Unit 3 over Europe

transportation barrier any form, physical or mental, that prevents goods from moving place to place
transportation corridor a land or water route to move people and goods from place to place easily
communism a system of government in which a single political party controls the government and the economy
colonialism the practice of one country directly ruling and developing trade in a foreign territory for its own benefit
Magna Carta the "Great Charter"; a series of laws that limited the power of the King and gave rights to the citizens
republic a form of government in which officials are elected by the people to govern
democracy a form of government by the people, in which citizens often elect representatives to govern them
absolute monarchy a form of government in which the sovereign power is entrusted to the hands of a single magistrate
constitutional monarchy a monarchy in which the powers of the ruler are restricted to those granted under the constitution and laws of the nation
parliament the legislative branch in a monarchy
prime minister the head of the cabinet and often also the chief executive of a parliamentary democracy
European Union an economic organization composed of 27 European member countries
genocide the systematic and widespread extermination or attempted extermination of an entire national, racial, religious, or ethnic group
Holocaust the mass slaughter by the Nazis of six million Jews and other during World War II
allies/alliance a partnership between countries
