| transportation barrier | any form, physical or mental, that prevents goods from moving place to place |
| transportation corridor | a land or water route to move people and goods from place to place easily |
| communism | a system of government in which a single political party controls the government and the economy |
| colonialism | the practice of one country directly ruling and developing trade in a foreign territory for its own benefit |
| Magna Carta | the "Great Charter"; a series of laws that limited the power of the King and gave rights to the citizens |
| republic | a form of government in which officials are elected by the people to govern |
| democracy | a form of government by the people, in which citizens often elect representatives to govern them |
| absolute monarchy | a form of government in which the sovereign power is entrusted to the hands of a single magistrate |
| constitutional monarchy | a monarchy in which the powers of the ruler are restricted to those granted under the constitution and laws of the nation |
| parliament | the legislative branch in a monarchy |
| prime minister | the head of the cabinet and often also the chief executive of a parliamentary democracy |
| European Union | an economic organization composed of 27 European member countries |
| genocide | the systematic and widespread extermination or attempted extermination of an entire national, racial, religious, or ethnic group |
| Holocaust | the mass slaughter by the Nazis of six million Jews and other during World War II |
