Who was John Cabot? He was an Italian but sailed for England. His real name is Giovanni Caboto.
Who hired Cabot? King Henry the 7th hired him.
What was the goal? They wanted to compete for land and wealth.
What happened in May of 1497? Cabot and 18 sailors set a course north of Columbus's first route.
When did they reach land? They reached land on June 24.
Who did Cabot claim land for? He claimed land for England.
What country did they thought they reached? They thought they reached Asia-called them "Indies".
Where were they really? They landed on the Coast of Newfoundland.
Who was Amerigo Vespucci? He was an Italian and he didn't believe Columbus or Cabot found Asia he thinks they found some place NEW.
Where did Vespucci land? He was in South America and it wasn't like Polo's description of Asia.
After that what did Vespucci think? He now thinks that the world was larger than imagined.
What did king Henry do in 1507? He hired a mapmaker to make new maps with the new lands.
Who did they name the lands after? They named the new lands after Amerigo Vespucci. (It was only South America- North America was added to the map much later)
Who was Vasco Nunez de Balboa? He was a Spanish explorer and was one of the first to settle in the Americas.
Where did he have a farm? He had a farm in Hispaniola even tho he wasn't any good at farming.
What did Balboa need to give to a lot of people? He owed people a lot of money.
What did he do because he didn't have the money to owe people? He jumped on a ship and sailed to Columbia.
What did Balboa help do? He helped somebody steal land from the Native Tribes.
What did Balboa start in a area of Panama? He started a settlement in an area in Panama.
What did Balboa do in 1513? He crossed Panama to reach Pacific Ocean.
Who was Ferdinand Magellan? He was a Portuguese but sailed for Spain.
How many people and ships did he lead? He lead 5 ships and 250 sailors- they left in 1519.
Where did they sail to? They sailed to the tip of South America.
What did Magellan name? He named the Pacific Ocean (peaceful). It was calm compared to the Atlantic Ocean.
What did Magellan think he could do? He thought he cross the Atlantic Ocean in a few days-it took 3 months.
How did many sailors die? They died of illness or hunger.
How did Magellan die? He died in battle in the Philippines-he got wounded.
How many miles were they from Asia? 500 miles
How many ships made it back to Spain in 1522? 1 ship made it back to Spain.
What did Magellan achieve? His boat was the first to circumnavigate the world.
