What does Renaissance mean? Rebirth
Who made the printing press? Johannes Gutenburg
Who wrote the most popular book of all time? It was written by Marco Polo 200 years earlier- it told of his journey to China and all the amazing inventions he saw including gunpowder and the compass(he also saw riches ie. silks and spices)
How did the Europeans travel to China? They traveled via land- this took months to cross Asia through mountains and deserts. They soon began to travel via sea. They didn't have accurate maps and NO technology.
what does navigation mean? The science of planning and following a route.
What does caravel mean? A long narrow ship that could carry many goods and traveled quickly.
What did Prince Henry do? He was the navigator and hired people to create better maps. He also ordered scientists to improve the compass and astrolabe.
What does an astrolabe do? It figures out the position of the moon, stars, and sun =latitude.
What does a compass do? It finds the longitude of a place.
What else does Prince Henry do? He starts ordering expeditions (exploring trip) to search for sea routes from Portugal to Asia.
What did Prince Henry believe? He believed the most direct route was around Africa across Indian Ocean to Asia.
What was the only way to get to Asia so far? They would take the Silk Road to reach Asia.
What was the Silk Road? The Silk Road is an ancient land route between China and Italy.
Who often travelled the Silk Road? Marco Polo often traveled via Silk Road.
What was Asia known as at this time? It was known as the "the Indies".
What is an empire? An empire is a land ruled by a nation that won control of them.
What did most people not realize? Most people didn't realize that there were more continents- Europe, Asia, Africa.
How did Christopher Columbus think he could get to Asia? He thought he could get to Asia by going west across the "ocean sea".(Atlantic ocean)
Who believed him? No one believed him and he didn't have any money or ships.
What were the risks of exploring? The ship could sink, and you could find nothing valuable.
What were the benefits of exploring? The benefits are you could find riches.
Who searched for a ruler to pay for his exploring for 3 years? Columbus searched for a ruler for 3 years.
Who were the 2 people who supported Columbus exploration trip? King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella supported his trip.
What did Columbus promise to do while on his exploration? He promised to spread Catholic beliefs.
What happens on August 3rd, 1492? Columbus leaves Spain with 90 sailors.
What ships did they take on the exploration? The Pinta, Santa Maria, and the Nina?
How many months were they out at sea without and signs of land? They were at sea for 2 months without seeing any signs of land.
What was happening at sea? There was many storms but no wind.
What does the crew start to do? They start to get worried.
What happens later on their trip? The weather changes and they see birds. They start following the birds.
What happens on October 12, 1492? They see land!
How far did they travel before see land? They travelled 4,100 miles.
Where did they land? They landed in San Salvador.
What did Columbus think he reached? He thought he reached Asia and that he was on the Indies...thus the first people he saw Indians.
