WW1 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Central Powers Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria.
Allied Powers Serbia, Russia, France, Great Britain, Italy, United States.
Trenches a long, narrow ditch.
Submarines a warship with a streamlined hull designed to operate completely submerged in the sea for long periods, equipped with an internal store of air and a periscope and typically armed with torpedoes and/or missiles.
Propaganda Propaganda is a form of communication aimed towards influencing the attitude of the community toward some cause or position by presenting only one side of an argument.
Treaty of Brest-Litovsk The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was a peace treaty signed in 1918 between the Russian and the Central Powers.
Nationalism Sense of pride or loyalty to a nation.
Militarism The glorification of keeping a strong amred forces.
Imperalism THe policy of establishing economic, political, and military dominance over weaker nations in order to build an empire;
Alliance Unions made between nations, states, or individuals.
Fourteen Points Fourteen points was a speech by President Wilson in 1918 to have peace in Europe.
Zimmerman Note The Zimmermann Telegram was a 1917 proposal from the German Empire for Mexico to join the Central Powers, in the event of the United States entering World War I on the side of the allied Powers.
The Sussex Pledge The Sussex pledge was a pledge from Germany to the United States. The pledge said that Germany would not sink any merchant ships with out a warning or without saving human lives.
U-Boat A German submarine used in World War 1.
Treaty of Versailles The 1919 treaty that would end World War 1.
