| Term | Definition |

| Central Powers | An alliance with these countries: Serbia, Russia, France, Great Britain, Italy, and eventually the U.S.A. |
| Allied Powers | An Alliance with these countries: Austria- Hungary, Germany, Ottoman Empire (Turkey), and Bulgaria. |
| Trenches | A long hole in the ground made of mud, where soldiers lived, and fought. |
| Submarine | a tube like ship that can go under water and navigated under water, usually built for warfare and armed with torpedoes or guided missiles. |
| Propaganda | Opinions expressed for the purpose of influencing the actions of others. |
| Treaty Of Brest-Litovsk | The treaty taking Russia out of the war. |
| Nationalism | Sense of pride or loyalty to a nation. |
| Militarism | The glorification of keeping strong armed forces. |
| Imperialism | The policy of establishing economic, political and military dominance over weaker nations in order to build an empire. |
| Alliance | Unions made between nations, states, or individuals. |
| Fourteen Points | The speech that president Wilson made 10 months before the end of the war. The speech said: smaller military forces, an end to secret treaties, freedom of the seas, free trade, and changes in national boundaries. |
| Zimmerman Note | A coded note meant for Mexico from Germany. It was intercepted by Great Britain, who decoded it. |
| The Sussex Pledge | Stated: "From here forward we will not sink merchant ships without warning and without saving human live."- Germany |
| U-Boat | German submarines. These were used to spy on other countries and take down ships. |
| Treaty of Versailles | The treaty that ended WWI. |
