social studies chapter ten, section one

QuestionAnswer
what Is a polis? a city state, which is the geographical and political center of life.
what is an acropolis? farming villages, fields, and orchards grouped around a fortified hill.
what is an agora? an open area used as a market place.
how was the city states separated? by the mountains.
what did each city state have? government and laws.
how many citizens did an average polis have? 5,000 to 10,000 citizens.
who weren't citizens? the workers born outside of Greece like women, children, and enslaved people.
what were the rights of a citizen? they could vote, own property, hold public office, and speak for themselves in court.
what were the citizens to do in return? they were expected to take part in government and defend their polis in time of war, or conflict.
what were the two greatest city states? Sparta, and Athens.
