| scientific revolution | a new way of thinking about the natural world, based on careful observations, a willingness for people to question accepted beliefs |
| ethnic group | group of people who share common ancestry, language, religion, customs, or combination of such characteristics |
| democracy | a political system in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who can elect people to represent them |
| revolution | the overthrow of a government by those who are governed |
| urbanization | movement of people from rural areas to cities |
| landlocked | completely surrounded by land with no direct access to the ocean |
| Cold War | a conflict that was between the US and the Soviet Union. The nations never directly confronted each other on the battlefield but deadly threats went on for years. |
| European Union | an international organization of European countries formed after World War II to reduce trade barriers and increase cooperation among its members |
| constitutional monarchy | a system of governing in which the ruler's power is limited by law |
| communism | a political system in which the government owns all property and dominates all aspects of life in a country. |
