What is scattering Jews away from their homeland? Diaspora
Why did the Sumerians farm in that region? The rivers deposit silt as they flow south, making the region a good place for farming.
What technology did they develop? The Mesopotamians used levees which was a wall that kept water in their banks and another tool was irrigation which is a system of canals that brought water and silt to fields and crops.
What are the differences between the 10 Commandments and the Code of Hammurabi? The 10 Commandments are written by God. It doesn't matter what class you are. There are no consequences and they are religious laws. The Hammurabi is written by Hammurabi. It depends on class. There are consequences and they are political laws.
What are the similarities between the 10 Commandments and the Code of Hammurabi? They are both rules. they are primary sources.
How do you read a timeline? If both numbers are B.C. or A.D. you subtract the dates. If the numbers are B.C. and another is A.D you add.
What is the fertile crescent? It was a lush and green area in Western Asia between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers.
What are the Tigris and Euphrates rivers? they are rivers located in Mesopotamia that began in the Taurus mountains.
What is Mesopotamia? It is land between two rivers located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. It is present day Iraq.
What is silt? It is loose fertile soil carried by water.
What is a drought? It is long periods without rain.
What are levees? They are used to control floods. It is a wall that keeps the river in its banks.
What is irrigation? It is canals used to water crops and fields.
What is agriculture? It is a source for economy. The main crops were what and barley. The minor crops included beans, onions, lettuce, cucumbers and herbs.
What is erosion? It is the wearing away of soil by wind or water.
What is Sumer? It is a region in Southern Mesopotamia. It has great inventors, irrigation systems, wheeled vehicles, sailboats, pottery wheel, math and science ideas.
What is cuneiform? It is one of the earliest writing forms. It used pictures/symbols to represent things they described.
What is a scribe? It is an official writer and they are usually male.
What is a city-state? It is a self governing city that governs nearby villages.
What is a ziggurat? It is a pyramid with a temple on top. It is found in the center of Sumerian cities.
What is polytheism? It is the belief in many gods or goddesses.
Who was Enheduana? She was a Sumerian priestess. She was also a scribe (female). About 4,000 years ago she wrote a poem praising the gods and goddesses of Sumer.
Who was Sargon? He was a famous king of a city-state called Kish. He created the first great empire.
What is an empire? It is a group of lands and people ruled by one government.
Who was Gilgamesh? He was a hero the Sumerians honored. He had many adventures but never found the secret to living forever.
What is Assyria? It was once known as Ashur. It was a large kingdom to the North of Sumer. the people were known as Assyrians.
What is Nineveh? It is one of the largest cities of Assyria located on the Tigris River.
Who is Hammurabi? He is the King of Babylon. His empire was called Babylonia. He was the creator of one of the oldest code of laws. (code of Hammurabi)
What is Babylonia? It is a wealthy and powerful capital of a great empire due to valuable trade goods that passed through Babylon.
What is the Code of Law? It is a written code of laws.
What is an aqueduct? It is a raised waterway that carried water from 30 miles away.
What is Judaism? It is the religion practiced by the people of Jewish faith.
Who was Abraham? He was the founder of Judaism. He led his family from Ur to Canaan (part of modern day Israel).
What is a covenant? It is a special agreement.
Who was Moses? He led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt.
What is a prophet? A person who speaks for God.
What is Mount Sinai? The mountain where the first five books of the Hebrew Bible and the ten commandments were given to Moses.
What is a Torah? This word means to teach. It is the first 5 books of the Hebrew Bible.
What is Monotheism? It is the belief in inly one God.
What are the Ten Commandments? The laws God gave Moses on Mount Sinai.
Who was King David? He made the city of Jerusalem his capital in about 1000 BC. Israel became a powerful kingdom under him.
What is Jerusalem? In 586 BC it was destroyed by Babylonian armies. It was a city created by King David.
Who was Soloman? He was the son of King David. He built a great temple. During his life priests and scribes began to write the Torah.
What is Israel? This kingdom was split into two. It was conquered by the Assyrians in 721 BC. It was the Northern Kingdom.
What was Judah? It was the southern kingdom that survived until 586 BC.
