Christianity A religion.
Baptize A ritual by which a person is welcomed into a religion.
Jesus Put to death on a Roman Cross in the first century C.E.
Disciples Small number of people that follow, most were simple, plain-spoken people.
Constantine An emperor in 312 C.E.
Parable A simple story that explains a moral or religious lesson.
Judea Came under Roman rule in 63 B.C.E.
Crucify To die on the cross.
Prefect A high official in Ancient Rome.
Resurrect To Return/ rise from the dead.
New Testament Comes from the writings of his followers.
Blasphemy A disrespectful act or statement against god.
Gospels An account of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.
Missionary Someone who tries to persuade others to believe in his or her religious teachings.
Messiah A savior that many Jews believed had been promised by God.
Why was there unrest in Judea after it came under Roman rule? The Jews were fiercely proud and independent people, and rebelled against Roman control.
How did the Roman prefect rule Judea? The prefect kept order and made sure Judea paid tribute to Rome, but usually left local affairs to the jews.
What are the gospels? The gospels are accounts of Jesus life and teachings written by his four followers.
Who wrote the gospels, and when did they write them? Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John wrote the gospels. They were written 30-70 years after Jesus.
According to the gospels, where was Jesus born? Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
What did Jesus study and learn about as a child? Jesus studied and learned about Jewish law and religious writings and carpentry.
Why was Jesus' baptism a turning point in his life? John identified him as the savior the Jews had been waiting for.
According to the gospels, what did Jesus say were most important of all Jewish laws? You shall love everyone.
Why did Jesus teachings upset some people? Jesus seemed to cave more about what was in peoples hearts than about peoples obedience to Jewish laws.
According to the gospels, why was Jesus condemned to die on the cross? It was feared he might lead a revolt against Rome.
Why was belief in Jesus resurrection was important to his followers? It convinced them that he was the son of God.
What caused Saul to stop persecuting Christians and become a missionary? He had heard the voice of the risen Jesus.
How did Paul's work help spread Christianity? Traveling through the empire preaching.
Why were Christians considered a threat to Rome? They refused to worship other roman Gods.
How did Romes persecution of Christians help Christianity grow and spread? People admired the bravery of Christians who were persuaded.
