| indulgences | a fee paid to the church to relax the penalty for a sin during the Middle Ages. |
| navigation | the science of finding position and planning routes |
| textile | related to cloth or clothing |
| fjord (fee ORD) | a deep, narrow bay |
| philosophers | a person who examines questions about the universe and searches for the truth. |
| veto | to reject a decision made by another government body |
| serf | from the 1500's to the 1800's, a poor Russian or European peasant farmer who rented land from a landlord and had few rights. |
