Peninsula a body of land surrounded on three sides by water
golden age a period of great wealth, culture, and democracy in Greece.
republic a form of government in which officials are elected by the people to govern.
feudal system a social structure during the Middle Ages consisting of a king, lords, vassals, and serfs.
indulgences a fee paid to the church to relax the penalty for a sin during the Middle Ages.
navigation the science of finding position and planning routes
textile related to cloth or clothing
fjord (fee ORD) a deep, narrow bay
philosophers a person who examines questions about the universe and searches for the truth.
veto to reject a decision made by another government body
serf from the 1500's to the 1800's, a poor Russian or European peasant farmer who rented land from a landlord and had few rights.
colony an area controlled by a distant country.
factory system a way of working in which each person works on only one part of a product.
canal a human-made waterway through land for boats and ships
aqueducts a transport system for carrying water long distances, sometimes raised on a bridge.
ecosystem a community of living organisms and their natural environment, or habitat
marine reserve an ocean area set aside to protect ocean life from humans
