TermDefinition
political machine an organization linked to a political party that often controlled the local government.
patronage another name for the spoils system, in which government jobs or favors are given out to political allies.
civil service the body of nonelected government workers.
trust a combination of firms or corporations formed by a legal agreement, especially to reduce competition.
muckraker a journalist who uncovers abuses and corruption in a society.
primary an election in which voters choose their party's candidate.
initiative the right of citizens to place a measure or issue before the voters or the legislature for approval.
referendum the practice of letting voters accept or reject measures proposed by the legislature.
recall the right that enables voters to remove unsatisfactory elected officials from office.
suffragist a man or woman who fought for a woman's right to vote.
prohibition the forbidding by law of the making or selling of alcoholic beverages.
trustbuster someone who breaks up a trust into smaller companies.
arbitration settling a dispute by agreeing to accept the decision of an impartial outsider.
square deal Theodore Roosevelt's promise of fair and equal treatment for all.
laissez-faire policy that government should interfere as little as possible in the nation's economy.
conservation the protection and preservation of natural resources.
discrimination unfair treatment of a group; unequal treatment because of a person's race, religion, ethnic background, or place of birth.
barrio a Spanish-Speaking neighborhood in a city, especially in the southwest, United States.
