| artifact | an object that people (who lived in the past) made or used and then left behind |
| historian | a person who studies history |
| geography | study of the land, water, plants, animals, and people of a place |
| geographic characteristics | physical and human characteristics of a place or region |
| human-made features | all of the things that people have made (buildings, homes, bridges, etc.) |
| natural/physical features | landscape features that were created by a natural process (rivers, mountains, valleys, etc.) |
| region | places that are alike in some way |
| population | the number of people living in an area |
| map | helps geographers see locations and places in relation to one another |
| elevation | how high the land is above sea level |
| legend | a tool that explains what the symbols used on a map mean |
| scale | shows the relationship of map distances to actual distances on the Earth's surface |
| symbol | something that stands for something else |
| longitude lines | imaginary lines that circle the Earth going north and south (up-down) |
| latitude lines | imaginary lines that circle the Earth going east and west (left-right) |
