WWI Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Allied Powers the alliance of Great Britain, France, Russia, and the US during WWI (began as the Triple Entente)
Central Powers the alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungary, the ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria during WWI (began as the Triple Alliance)
Great War European conflict from 1914-1918: also known as World War I and " the war to end all wars".
Militarism Using strong armies and threats of war.
Nationalism The love of one's country
Ottoman Empire Turkey and its colonies
Scramble for Africa The division of much of Africa among European countries between 1885-1910.
Ally Political or military partner
Imperialism When 1 country takes over another country.
Ethnic Group People of the same race or nationality who share a distinctive culture
Primary Source Information that comes directly from a person who experienced an event.
Secondary Source Information about an event that does not come directly from a person who experienced that event.
