| urban sprawl | the growth of a town or city into the surrounding countryside |
| satellite town | a town that is close to a major urban centre but is not part of it |
| urban renewal | the cleaing up and development of inner city areas |
| tenements | large houses that are very overcrowded in the city centre |
| function | use of the area |
| primate city | city that is twice as big as the second biggest city |
| reclaimed land | land gained from the sea and used for cultivation or settlement |
| polder | piece of reclaimed land |
| bridging point | narrowest point to cross a river |
| linear settlement | settlement along aroad |
| clustered settlement | settlement grouped together |
| dispersed settlement | spread out and randomly scattered |
| footloose industry | an industry that is not tied to any particular place or raw material |
| traffic congestion | too much traffic in an area causing traffic jams |
| commuters | people who travel to work every day |
| dormitory towns | towns where people live and not work |
| CBD | central business district.... the city centre where you would find shops,banks etc. |
