| Pioneer | Early settlers. |
| Manifest Destiny | The belief that the U.S. could expand across the county to the Pacific Ocean. |
| Transcontinental Railroad | A railroad that stretches across the country. |
| Gold Rush | A strong sudden attraction of thousands of people to an area in search of gold ex. 1849 California. |
| Cattle Drivers | The movement of cowboys of a large herds of cattle from grazing areas to towns were they could be shipped to market. |
| Homestead Act | A law enacted where new settlers received 160 acres of land for a small fee; they had to build a home within six months and agree to live there for five years; after that the land was theirs. |
| Homesteaders | A settler or pioneer. |
| Drought | A long period without rain. |
| Irrigation | System of directing water from a source to a place that needs it. |
| Dry Farming | Method in which farmers conserved moisture in the soil during dry weather. |
