| Ten Commandments | a set of laws for responsible behavior that, according to the Bible, were given to the Jewish people by God |
| Judaism | the religion of the Jewish people |
| exile | the act of being forced to live in another place |
| Diaspora | the settling of Jews outside of ancient Israel |
| synagouge | a Jewish house of worship |
| confederation | a loose group of goverments working together |
| republic | a form of government in which the citizens elect representatives to make laws and run the government |
| consul | one of two chief officials who held office in the ancient Roman Republic |
| veto | to stop or reject the actions of another |
| dictator | a ruler with absolute authority |
| Senate | the most powerful governing body in the Roman Republic |
| patrician | a wealthy descendant of Rome's earliest settlers |
| plebeian | a member of the common people in ancient Rome |
