| irrigation | a system of canals to bing water to crops and fields |
| erosion | weathering away of soil by wind or water |
| Mesopotamia | The region between the Tigris and Euphrates. Means Land between the Rivers. |
| Fertile Crescent | a region of western Asia. A lush green area through which two rivers, Tigris and Euphrates, flowed. |
| cuneiform | a early writing system |
| scribe | an official writer |
| Sumer | a region southern Mesopotamia |
| city-states | a self-governing city that also governs nearby villages |
| ziggurat | a tall flattened pyramid made of mud-brick. Had a temple on its flattened top. |
| polytheism | a belief in many gods and goddesses |
| empire | a group of lands and people ruled by one government |
| Sargon | a famous king of a city-state called Kish. Created the first great empire in history. |
| Gilgamesh | a great legend, a hero, part god and part human, set out on a long journey to try to discover how humans could live forever |
| Enheduana | a Sumerian priestess and scibe. |
