city-state a type of section of a country that sets its own laws independent of the country and has its own leader, like kings. Some major Sumerian city-states were Ur, Uruk, Kish, and Lagash.
civilization a society that has a stable food supply, so people can survive , a social structure, government, highly developed way of life, religion, written language, and technological advances.
stable food supply a food supply that was maintained by Sumerians to keep the civilization alive.
social structure the way a society is organized, in levels, and employment
government system to ensure the correct behavior of the people, and to rule
the arts creative forms of expression involving music, painting, and architecture
technology the use of tools and other inventions for practical purposes
irrigation a means of supplying land with water, involving dams, reservoirs, and canals.
plow a tool used for turning the soil for planting
merchant a person who makes money by selling goods
artisan a craftsperson
scribe a person who writes and records
ziggurat an ancient type of massive temple tower built to Sumerian gods that was believed to house the gods in shrines on the top, and had staircases for their gods to descend to Earth
shrine an area that worships a god or king with pictures or memories
architecture designing buildings, areas, communities, and other constructions and environments
lyre wooden instruments with strings and sound boxes, a big part of Sumerian culture.
sledges inefficient flat-bottomed carts used before the invention of the wheel
cuneiform writing that uses wedge-shaped characters, of the Sumerians
