| Columbian Exchange | movement of people, animals, plants, diseases, and ways of life between the Eastern Hemisphere and Western Hemisphere following the voyages of Columbus |
| Christopher Columbus | Italian-born explorer who sailed to the Americas in 1492. He was the first European to establish lasting contact between Europe and the Americas. |
| conquest | capture or taking of something by force |
| conquistador | Spanish word for conquerors who came to the Americas in the 1500s |
| convert | to change from one belief to another |
| Encomienda | grant given by the King of Spain to wealthy settlers in New Spain. Gave settlers control of all the Native Americans living on an area of land. |
| expedition | journey made for a special purpose |
| grid | pattern of criss-crossing lines that can help you find locations on a map |
| latitude | distance north or south of the equator, measured in degrees |
| longitude | distance east or west of the prime meridian, measured in degrees |
| meridian | imaginary line extending from the North Pole to the South Pole, also called longitude line |
| mission | religious settlement where missionaries live and work |
| missionary | person who teaches his or her religion to others who have different beliefs |
| plantation | large farm with many workers who live on the land they word |
| Prime Meridian | line of longitude marked 0 degrees. Other lines of longitude are measured in degrees east or west of the prime meridian |
| society | group of people forming a community |
