Proficient Vocabulary for Term 1

TermDefinition
Joint-Stock Company People pay money to sponsor or support a company, and they all own shares (or stocks) in that company
Prophecy A promise or story that people believe comes from the gods.
The Reformation A religious movement in Europe, trying to reform the Roman Catholic Church. It led to development of the Protestant churches.
Monopoly Complete control of a product or service, allowing the owner to drive up the price.
Ancestors A person’s forebears, or family members one is descended from.
Protestants Members of a church created during the Reformation; people who protested the Roman Catholic Church by leaving it and forming their own churches.
Indentured Servants A person who agrees to work for a time without pay for another, in exchange for passage to the New World.
Missionary A person sent into an area by a church to spread their religion.
Monarch A ruler or king.
Charter A document laying out the rules and boundaries for a new colony.
