Amendments A change in the Constitution
Apportion To divide
Articles of Confederation A document that outlined the first form of government in the United States
Bill of Rights The first 10 amendments to the Constitution
Census A population count taken every 10 years
Checks and Balances system in which power is spread amongst the three branches of government
Constitution A detailed, written plan of government
Executive Branch Branch that carries out the laws, includes the nations top officials
Federal Government Government at the national level
Impeach To accuse
Initiative allows voters to submit an ordinance to the legislative body
Judicial Branch Branch that interprets the laws
Legislative Branch Branch that makes the laws
Lobbyist A person who tries to influence legislators
Ordinance A statute or regulation
Political Party organization that shares the same ideas about government
Precinct A voting region
Propaganda material promoted and distributed by the advocates or opponents
Ratify To approve

Separation of Powers The split of authority among the three branches of government
