What was the British Lord George Germain's first plan for the British to win the war? To seize New York, then demolish the rebellion in Massachusetts.
Why did many African Americans become Loyalists? The British guaranteed slaves freedom if they fought for them.
Why did General Howe order the British to stop attacking in the New York battle? He underestimated General Washington, he thought he would give up and surrender when it looked like he would lose the battle.
What condition were the colonial troops in after the defeat in New York? They were hurt, hungry,tired,cold and had little hopes of winning the war. Many men left the army and headed home.
Washington planned a surprise attack on Christmas evening on the enemy in Trenton, what did the Hessians do? They were all asleep after they had celebrated Christmas so the Hessians surrendered.
What was the strategy that both the British and Americans adopted at the beginning of the war? Quick defeat of the other side by winning one large battle.
What was the revised British strategy to win the war? To divide the colonists by taking control of the Hudson river in New York. This would allow him to control the movement of men and supplies to the New England states.
What were 2 problems with the new British strategy? The route chosen to the Hudson River Valley was too difficult and General Howe who he was to meet in the valley had a different plan in mind, which was to capture Philadelphia.
What Battle was the turning point in the war? The Battle of Saratoga
Which country became an American ally after the British defeat at Saratoga? France sent troops, money, weapons and ships.
Where did Washingtons and his troops spend a terrible winter? At Valley Forge
Why couldn't Washington get food for his troops at Valley Forge? Farmers preferred to sell their food and supplies to the British who paid with gold instead of worthless paper money.
Who did General Washington put in charge of training his soldiers while they suffered at Valley Forge? A German Baron Friedrich von Stueben
Which battle marked the end of the war in the North? The battle of Monmouth
What style of fighting seen in the South was very successful against the British? Guerilla warfare
Who led a band of rebels that used Guerilla tactics to harass the British then fade into the swamps to attack again somewhere else? Francis Marion known as the "Swamp Fox"
How did the French contribute to the trap set for the British by General Washington? They helped surround Yorktown. They sent thousands of troops to America.They used their ships to cut off the entrance to Chesapeake Bay.
Why did Cornwallis surrender at Yorktown? The British navy couldn't get into the harbor so they never came to rescue him.
What were the terms of the Treaty of Paris? 1.Britain recognized the US as an independent nation. 2 Britain gave up all claims to land between the Atlantic and the Mississippi river and Canada south to Florida. 3. The United States agreed to return all rights and property to Loyalists
What impact did the American Revolution have in France? It influenced the people of France to rebel against tyranny and fight their own revolution.
