Revolution Vocab.

QuestionAnswer
First Continental Congress A meeting of all thirteen colonies in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 56 delegates were invited to attend.
Sons of Liberty An organization that was held in order to protest against the Stamp Act. It occurred in many different cities. Samuel Adams was the leader. They did their work in Boston, Massachusetts.
debt The amount of money that the British Government owed
Quebec Act Extended land boundaries to Ohio and Mississippi river
Delegates Someone who represents others in government
John Adams Samuel Adam's younger cousin and a lawyer, later the second president of the United States
Liberties Freedoms
George Grenville British Finance Minister looking for money, didn't like British laws. Felt that the colonists were ungrateful to the French and accused the colonists of smuggling
King George III Said Great Britain's national debt had doubled since the French and Indian War
Committee of Correspondence An Organization used in earlier protest the committee circulated writing about colonists' grievances against Britain. Other committees of correspondences sprang up bring together protestors opposed to British measures.
Writ(s) of Assistance Legal documents that enabled the officers to search homes and warehouses for goods that might be smuggled
Lobster Backs A British soldier in the 1700s- so called because of his red coat, especially during the American Revolutionary war.
Repeal To revoke or reject, especially by an official or formal act
Propaganda Information designed to influence opinion
External taxes Taxes that come from the outside
Smuggle The act sneaking something out illegally to avoid paying taxes or dealing with the government
boycott refuse to buy
Revenue Incoming money
Parliament The section of the British government responsible for all of the new laws.
Samuel Adams A protestor who helped to start the Sons of Liberty in order to protest against the Stamp Act. Leader of the Sons of Liberty.
George Grenville Felt that the colonists were ungrateful to the French and accused the colonists of smuggling.
King George III Said that Great Britain's national debt had doubled since the French and Indian War.
