| Feudalism | A political and economic arrangement in which a lord provides protection in exchange for loyalty and service. Developed because of people's need for protection against invaders. People gave crops as payment for protection. |
| Monastery | A place where a group of religious people live |
| Vassal | A person under the protection of a feudal lord |
| Oath of Fealty | A statement of loyalty |
| Knight | An armed soldier who fights on horseback |
| Hierarchy | A group of people organized by rank or power |
| Manor | The castle and estate of a feudal lord |
| Serf | A member of the lowest feudal class, bound to the land and whoever owned the land. |
| Guild | An association of tradespeople made up of merchants, craftspeople or artisans in the Middle Ages |
| Clergy | Persons ordained for religious work |
| Excommunication | The act that deprives someone of membership in the Catholic Church |
| Salvation | The deliverance of the soul from the power of sin |
| Pope | The head of the Catholic Church |
| Nobles | Those of exalted birth or rank; aristocracy. |
| Monarch | A queen or a king. |
| Lord | A person having domain over another; a ruler |
| Interdependent | Reliant on others to meet your needs. Occurs when people socialize. |
| Investiture | The act of giving "special clothes" in a ceremony (symbolized power). |
| Power Struggle | When two or more competitors of equal or nearly equal power try to gain influence over the other |
| Magna Carta | The charter of English political and civil liberties granted by King John in 1215; a guarantee of basic rights. |
