Culture, Regions, and Archaeology Review

geography is...... the study of Earth's environment and how it shapes people's lives and is in turn shaped by people's activities
What is climate? The pattern of weather in an area over an long period of time
A physical region is...... features that set it aside from the other regions
What is a cultural region? the way the people of a region live...for example, language, beliefs, arts, activities and occupations
What is a custom? a way of living that people of the same culture practice regularly over time
What are values? important parts of any culture that people of their culture think are most important
Oral history is....... spoken records, including stories that have been passed on from one generation to the next
What does it mean to excavate? to dig or scoop out earth
What is an archaeologist? a person who studies the remains of past cultures
An artifact is....... an object made by someone in the past
What is a source? anything that provides information or evidence
What is a primary source? an artifact that was created at that time.....for example, a photograph or a letter written by a pioneer
A secondary source is....... created later based on a primary source
A gene is...... a tiny unit of a cell of an animal or plant that determines the characteristics that on offspring inherits from its parent or parents.
What are things that could cause a culture to change? immigration, technology, war
What is something that was found on the Ice Man that made archaeologists change their dates as to when he lived? the COPPER axe
Which items show that the Ice Man was an advanced thinker? the bow and arrow, his shoes, his tender bag
Which items indicated that the Ice Man had medical knowledge? tattoos and dried mushrooms
What parasite did the Ice Man have in his intestines? footworm
What did the parasite in the Ice Man's intestines lead people to believe? he had had a serious illness
