Grade 5/6 course on Mapping & Using an Atlas

TermDefinition
Equator The line that separates the Earth into North and South hemispheres.
Prime Meridian The line that separates the Earth into West and East hemispheres.
International Date Line Another name for the Prime Meridian
Parallels Imaginary lines that run East to West along the width of the Earth.
Meridians Imaginary lines that run North to South along the length of the Earth.
Map Legend A key that shows what each symbol means on a map.
Hemispheres Halves of the globe. They can be Northern, Southern, Eastern, or Western.
Latitude A degree we use to measure how far North or South of the Equator a location is.
Longitude A degree we use to measure how far East or West of the Prime Meridian a location is.
Greenwich The city that lies directly on the Prime Meridian.
Atlas A book of maps that contains information about different locations on the Earth.
Index An area at the back of an atlas that tells you where to find each location in the atlas.
Scale A way to measure how much smaller or bigger a drawing is compared to the real thing.
Contour Map A map that shows the elevation of an area.
Elevation How high or how low an area is compared to sea level. Mountains have high elevations.
Grid When you put together lines of latitude and lines of longitude, they form a grid. Any location on Earth can be found this way.
