Church of England The English broke away from the Catholic Church and formed their own sect (religious group)
Puritans They wanted to purify the church (correct the wrongs)
Separatists Did not agree with some of the practices of the Church of England, but they wanted to separate or cut all ties with the Church
Netherlands Pilgrims tried to emigrate first to the Netherlands but felt they were losing their English culture, they were not satisfied with the jobs that were available
Joint Stock Company A group of investors. Pilgrims asked merchants to buy stock so they could start a new colony in North America
Plymouth Wanted to land by Jamestown but because of bad weather they landed too far north near Cape Cod.
William Bradford Pastor, and governor of Plymouth
Samoset First native Americans to make contact with the pilgrims. He was able to speak some english he learned from fishermen.
Squanto Taught the Pilgrims how to plant corn, where to catch fish, and how to fertilize the fields with the fish remains.
Wampanoag They are a group of many small tribes that work together. They live near Plymouth. The tribe is lead by chief Massasoit.
Massasoit He was the leader of the wampanoag tribes. Through his life time their was a peace agreement with the colonists.
