| Church of England | The English broke away from the Catholic Church and formed their own sect (religious group) |
| Puritans | They wanted to purify the church (correct the wrongs) |
| Separatists | Did not agree with some of the practices of the Church of England, but they wanted to separate or cut all ties with the Church |
| Netherlands | Pilgrims tried to emigrate first to the Netherlands but felt they were losing their English culture, they were not satisfied with the jobs that were available |
| Joint Stock Company | A group of investors. Pilgrims asked merchants to buy stock so they could start a new colony in North America |
| Plymouth | Wanted to land by Jamestown but because of bad weather they landed too far north near Cape Cod. |

| Samoset | First native Americans to make contact with the pilgrims. He was able to speak some english he learned from fishermen. |
| Squanto | Taught the Pilgrims how to plant corn, where to catch fish, and how to fertilize the fields with the fish remains. |
| Wampanoag | They are a group of many small tribes that work together. They live near Plymouth. The tribe is lead by chief Massasoit. |
| Massasoit | He was the leader of the wampanoag tribes. Through his life time their was a peace agreement with the colonists. |
