Early American colonies

Richard Hakluyt Urged English cron to start colonies to get raw materials for trade.
Roanoke First English colony that disappeared mysteriously.
Sir Walter Raleigh Started the colony of Roanoke.
Joint stock company Investors put money into a project to earn profits.
Virginia Company of London Sponsored the Plymouth colony in Plymouth Mass.
Charter Written contract issues by the government giving the holder the right to establish a colony.
Jamestown Founded in 1607 by the Virginia company of London named after King James.
John Smith Made sure the colonists worked in the colony in order to have food.
John Rolfe Introduced tobacco into the colony making the colony a success. Also married Pocahontas.
Indentured Servant Men and women who had their passage paid to the Americas in return for their labor for a number of years.
House of burgesses 1st representative assembly in the American colonies.
Nathaniel Bacon "He he Bacon" Led a farmer revolt in 1676. Bacon believed that the Governor showed favoritism to large land owners by taxing them less than small farmers.
