Who did not benefit in system of sharecropping? Sharecropper

15th amendment suffrage (right to vote) can't be denied on basis of race
What ended reconstruction? Compromise of 1877
What changes in political power occured after civil war? Federal Government became stronger than States
Why did Republican governments in South struggle after the civil war? White Southerners refused to accept African Americans as equals
Why were civil rights laws passed during reconstruction? To abolish Black codes
How were southerners individual property rights protected during Reconstruction? Former confederates got their land back.
How were Native Americans treated by government policies? They were forced to move onto reservations
What was the Homestead Act? Gave 160 acres of free land to anyone who would improve it for 5 years.
What effect did Transcontinental railroad have on the West? Made it easier for Migrants to move West
Populist Party: who were they and what did they want? Farmers who wanted an increase in money supply to raise crop prices.
What allowed factories to be built anywhere? electricity
What was special about Pullman, Illinois? Town was built by company for its factory workers
Social Darwinism: what did they feel about government involvement? Laissez Faire-hands off. No government regulations!
How did the government try to regulate monopolies in early 1900's? break up trusts
How did Labor Unions help workers? Won shorter hours and better pay
What were settlement houses and who created them? Social reformers set up places in the community to help the provide the poor and immigrants with Social, Cultural, and Educational help
What is Americanization? Assimilate people of various cultures into American society
What made it hard for immigrants to assimilate? Racism and resentment
