| Prime Meridian | An imaginary line that runs north to south, 0* Longitude |
| Lines of Longitude | Imaginary lines that circle the earth from north to south |
| Lines of Latitude | Imaginary lines the circle the earth from east to west |
| Parallels | Lines of Latitude |
| Meridians | Lines of Longitude |
| Scale | This part of a map is used to measure real-life distances on a map |
| Physical Map | A type of map that shows landforms and features of an area |
| Political Map | A type of map that shows boundaries between states or nations |
| Elevation Map | A type of map the shows the height of an area |
| Sea Level | 0 feet |
| Compass Rose | A design on a map that shows directions |
| Intermediate Directions | The directions that are in between the cardinal directions: NE, SE, NW, SW |
| Archipelago | A group of islands |
| Bay | A body of water enclosed by land...smaller than a GULF, so not a GULF |
| Cape | A point of land extending into a body of water |
| Delta | A TRIANGULAR deposit of sand and soil that collects at the mouth of some rivers |
| Gulf | Part of an ocean extending into land and usually larger than a BAY...so, not a bay |
| Harbor | A place where ships anchor |
| Isthmus | A narrow strip of land with water on both sides connecting two larger bodies of land |
| Oasis | A fertile area with trees and water located in a dry region |
| Strait | A narrow waterway connecting 2 larger bodies of water |
| Tributary | A small stream or river that flows to a larger river or ocean |
| Canal | A man-made waterway that is dug for ships to pass |
| Channel | A wider waterway than a strait that connects 2 large bodies of water; also the deepest part of a river |
| Desert | A dry, barren region without trees |
| Glacier | A large, moving piece of ice |
| Island | Land surrounded by water |
| Lake | A smaller body of water surrounded by land |
| Mountain | A landform with high elevation and peaked at the top |
| Mountain Range | A row of connected mountains |
| Mouth | The part of a river where its waters flow into another body of water |
| Peninsula | Land surrounded by water on 3 sides |
| Plain | Large, flat area |
| River | Moving water flowing to a lake, sea, or ocean |
| Swamp | A shallow body of water, wetlands with trees |
| Valley | A low land area between mountains |
| Volcano | An opening in the earth's surface through which steam, ashes, and lava are forced out |
| Cardinal Directions | The main set of directions: N, S, E, W |
| Equator | An imaginary line the splits the earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres |
| Map Key | tells what symbols on a map stand for |
