TermDefinition
Matter Has mass and takes up space.
Atoms Tiny building blocks of matter.
Element Substance that contains only one type of atom.
Proton Positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom.
Neutron Particle without an electrical charge in the nucleus of an atom.
Electron Negatively charged particle of an atom.
Atomic Number The number of protons in an atom.
Mass number The number of protons and the number of neutrons in an atom.
Isotopes Atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons.
Compound Matter that is made up of two or more elements.
Ion Electrically charged atom.
Mixture A combination of substances that do not change or combine chemically.
Heterogeneous Mixture Mixture which are NOT mixed evenly.
Homogeneous Mixture Mixture which are EVENLY mixed.
Solution Mixture which one substance is completely and evenly mixed in another substance.
Density A physical property dividing the mass of an object.
