Vocabulary based of the study of European governments; 6th GPS
| Term | Definition |

| Unitary | A form of government where power is held by one central authority |
| Democratic | The power is vested in the people and exercised directly or indirectly |
| Oligarchic | A government by the few, usually with corrupt and selfish purposes |
| Autocratic | A government in which one person possesses unlimited power |
| Confederation | A voluntary association of independent states |
| Federal | A form of government in which power is divided between one central and several regional authorities |
| Industrialized countries | Countries that depend on manufacturing more than farming; higher standard of living |
| Third world countries | Developing nations that do not have much industry and that depend on farming; lower standard of living |
| Prime minister | The head of state in a parliamentary system of democracy |
| Chancellor | Head of state running day-to-day operations of government is some democracies, like Germany |
| Parliamentary system | Type of democratic government where citizens elect MPs who choose a prime minister |
| Presidential system | Type of democratic government where citizens elect members of legislature and also the chief executive, known as the president |
| House of Lords | The less-powerful, advisory lawmaking body of the United Kingdom’s Parliament |
| House of Commons | The powerful, representative lawmaking body of the United Kingdom’s Parliament |
| British pound | The currency of the United Kingdom |
| Euro | The currency of the European Union |
| Bundesrat | The less-powerful upper house of the German Parliament, which represents the interest of the state government |
| Bundestag | The powerful lower house of the German Parliament, elects a chancellor |
| Basic Law | The constitution of Germany |
| Welfare state | Government that guarantees certain benefits to the unemployed, poor, disabled, old, and sick, such as done in Basic Law of Germany |
| State Duma | The elected body of Russia’s Federal Assembly |
| European Union | a group of 27 European countries united |
| Federal Council | That part of Russia’s Federal Assembly that represents state government, approves presidential appointments |
