| Term | Definition |

| Basin | An area of land drained by a given river and its branches (tributaries); and are of land surrounded by lands of higher elevation. |
| Canyon | A deep narrow valley with steep walls. |
| Cape | A point of land that extends into a river, lake or ocean. |
| Cliff | A steep high wall or rock, earth or ice. |
| Continent | One of the 7 landmasses of the world. |
| Delta | A flat low lying land built up from soil carried by a river and deposited at the rivers mouth. |
| Desert | A region of vegetation either hot or cold that receives ten inches or less of precipitation per year. |
| Hill | Elevated land with sloping sides and a rounded summit; generally smaller than a mountain. |
| Island | A land area, smaller than a continent, completely surrounded by water. |
| Isthmus | A narrow stretch of land connecting two larger areas of land, |
| Mesa | A broad flat-topped landform with steep sides; smaller than a plateau. |
| Mountain | Land with steep sides that rises sharply 1,000 feet or more from the surrounding land : generally larger and more rugged than a hill. |
| Peninsula | A body of land jutting out into a lake or ocean, surrounded by water on three sides. |
| Plain | An area of level land usually at low elevation and often covered with grasses. |
| Plateau | An area of flat or rolling land at high elevation, about 300-3,000 feet high |
| Rainforest | A dense woodland with an average rainfall of 100 inches or more per year. |
| Tundra | A region of vegetation at high latitudes, high elevations and characterized by cold temperatures and sparse vegetation. |
| Valley | An area of low land between hills or mountains, often with a river or stream running through. |
| Volcano | A mountain created as liquid rock and ash that erupt from the earth. |
| Bay | Part of a large body of water that extends into a shoreline, generally smaller than a gulf. |
| Channel | A wide strait or waterway between two landmasses that lie close to each other; deep part of a river way. |
| Glacier | A large, thick body of slowly moving ice, |
| Gulf | Part of a large body of water that extends into a shoreline, generally larger and more deeply indented than a bay. |
| Harbor | A sheltered place along a shoreline where ships can anchor safely. |
| Lake | A sizable inland body of water. |
| Mouth | A place where a stream or a river flows into a larger body of water. |
| Ocean | One of the 5 major bodies of salt water that surround the continents. |
| Ocean Current | A stream of either cold or warm water that moves in a definite direction through an ocean. |
| River | A large natural stream of water that runs through land. |
| Sea | A large body of water this is completely or partly surrounded by land. |
| Sound | A broad inland body of water, often between a coastline and one or more islands off the coast. |
| Source | A place where a river or stream begins, often in the highlands. |
| Strait | A narrow stretch of water that connects two larger bodies of water |
| Tributary | A small stream or river that flows into a larger river or stream; a branch of a river. |
