Trail of Tears Trail that the Cherokee Indians were forced to walk when the white settlers took their land.
The Plains The land between the Appalachian Mountains and the Rocky Mountains.
Mormons The group of people who followed Joseph Smith and who believed that they got to heaven by doing good works.
United States government Did not keep their treaty agreement with the Cherokee.
Forty-niners Men who went to California to look for gold.
Missionaries Often the first white people to travel out west to tell Native Americans about Christ.
James Beckwourth Man who discovered a pass in The Rocky Mountains while he was looking for gold.
War of 1812 A war between England and America that ended with a treaty.
Camp Meetings Revival meetings that lasted for a week and were held outside.
The Bible God's Word. It is a sin to add more to the Bible.
The Star-Spangled Banner A poem written about the hope that the American flag would still be flying over Fort McHenry after the battle there.
Stephen Paxson The greatest Sunday school missionary in the history of the West.
James Madison The president who took the United States into war with England.
Joseph Smith The Mormon leader who said that an angel gave me teachings to add to the Bible. He led the Mormons to Utah to settle.
Native Americans They did not want white men to cross their land, so they shot arrows and burned wagons
Did many prospectors (gold miners) make much money? No. A few made a lot of money, some made a little money, but many died on the way or turned back to go home.
